GlamSpinTennis had the honor of attending the Washington Tennis & Education Foundation (WTEF) Annual Tennis Ball on May 9, 2014.
WTEF raised over $1 million to provide academic support to kids in the District of Columbia!
WTEF is an amazing organization that uses tennis and education to serve kids in Washington, DC. WTEF reaches low-income children across the District and offers them an opportunity to learn life skills through the great game of tennis.
This year's Tennis Ball honored recently retired tennis pro and former top-ranked American, James Blake, as well as former top-ranked junior, Taylor Townsend.
Taylor attended the Tennis Ball wearing a glam tennis racket shaped necklace.
GlamSpinTennis also spoke to Jeff Newman, the Tournament Director of Washington DC's Citi Open.
WTEF is a Citi Open beneficiary and according to Jeff, "It's always good to see a tennis community come together for a good cause."
Jeff also promised to announce player commitments to the Citi Open very soon over the next few weeks sometime, "...before Roland Garros."
In addition to WTEF and the Citi Open, the District of Columbia also plays host to the Washington Kastles, the city's World Team Tennis (WTT) franchise.
According to Jeff, "We support [WTT's] efforts. The more people we can get to be interested in tennis the better."
Overall, the Tennis Ball was a fantastic event and showcased the strong values, such as leadership, planning, strategy, and patience, that tennis can impart on kids.
